چکیده

K.E.M. Hospital, Parel, Mumbai-400012. Abstract Due to cost and complexity, reference broth microdilution antifungal susceptibility method is not feasible in resource constraint setting. Therefore here is a need to develop a cost effective method which would help in simultaneous rapid identification of Candida species and performance of disc diffusion susceptibility testing. Comparison of results of disc diffusion susceptibility testing of Candida isolates against fluconazole and voriconazole was performed on CHROMagar and on MHA-GMB. Overall agreement between the two methods for fluconazole was 91.66% and for voriconazole was 93.33% and thus CHROMagar is found to help in simultaneous identification of Candida species as well as in antifungal susceptibility testing.

Disk diffusion testing using Candida sp. colonies taken directly from CHROMagar Candida medium may decrease time required to obtain results.

We compared results of disk diffusion antifungal susceptibility testing from Candida sp. strains passaged on CHROMagar and on potato dextrose agar. The overall categorical agreements for fluconazole and voriconazole disk testing were 95% and 98% with 0% and 0.5% very major errors, respectively. Disk diffusion testing by the CLSI (formerly NCCLS) M44-A method can be performed accurately by takin...

In vitro activities of voriconazole (UK-109,496) and four other antifungal agents against 394 clinical isolates of Candida spp.

Voriconazole (formerly UK-109,496) is a new monotriazole antifungal agent which has potent activity against Candida, Cryptococcus, and Aspergillus species. We investigated the in vitro activity of voriconazole compared to those of fluconazole, itraconazole, amphotericin B, and flucytosine (5FC) against 394 bloodstream isolates of Candida (five species) obtained from more than 30 different medic...

Epidemiology and antifungal susceptibility of Candida species in a tertiary care hospital, Kolkata, India

Background and Purpose: The incidence of fungal infection as well as candidemia has increased significantly, contributing to morbidity and mortality in the developed countries. The alarming increase in infections with multidrug resistant bacteria is due to overuse of a broad spectrum antimicrobials, which leads to over growth of Candida spp.; thus, enhancing its opportunity to cause the disease...

Bloodstream yeast infections in a university hospital in Northeast Turkey: a 4-year survey.

This study presents data on species distribution and antifungal susceptibility profiles of Candida bloodstream isolates obtained from a Turkish Tertiary Care Hospital during a 4-year period. All hospitalized patients who had ≥ 1 blood culture positive for yeast during their hospital stay from January 2005 through 2009 were included in this study. All isolates were identified to species level us...

Molecular Identification and In-Vitro Susceptibility of Candida albicans and C. dubliniensis Isolated from Immunocompromised Patients

Background: Yeasts are increasingly implicated in serious systemic infections. The aim of this study was to identify Candida albicans and C. dubliniensis from isolates of immunocompromised patients and evaluate the in vitro antifungal activities of them against antifungal agents. Methods: One hundred and seventy eight C. albicans were isolated by routine methods from 403 immunocompromised patie...
